Our AI foundation model and 3D Scan to CAD tool can quickly reconstruct 3D scans and other mesh files into parametric CAD with editable feature trees. But like all tools, there’s still limits to what they can achieve.
Here’s some best practices for using Backflip today (these will evolve over time as we continue to improve our AI model):
- Align 3D scan/mesh geometry with the major axes (XYZ) and ground planes (XY, XZ, YZ). The built-in Auto-align feature generally does a great job of aligning the mesh for you.
- Upload watertight 3D scans. They will typically produce better reconstructed CAD geometries than files with large gaps, holes, or missing disconnected geometry in the scan
- Ideally keep 3D scan/mesh file size under 50MB (larger files will still work but may slow down the app)
- Avoid thin-walled or shelled parts for now. Eg. parts designed for sheet metal or injection molding
- Works best with prismatic geometries or parts designed for 3-axis CNC machining or turning
- Only upload individual parts, not assemblies or parts with multiple disjoint components
- Try using Thinking Mode if Fast Mode doesn't produce good results (allows the agent time to iteratively reconstruct a CAD model, then evaluate it for correctness, and try again)
